Session:
Airport Cities & Transport Connections

10:10 - 10:40 - From landing strip to city – evolution towards aerotropolis
Synopsis: Airports originally served purely technical requirements: aeroplanes landed and took off with new passengers on board. Over the last 50 years this has changed dramatically. Passengers expect service and comfort, and airports can no longer rely on being financed by tax money. Aeronautical revenues alone cannot fund a whole airport. Searching for new sources of revenue, airports developed shopping and service concepts, which gradually outgrew the terminal limits into airport cities. As those became too small, a new concept was born: the aerotropolis.
