Speaker Biograghy: Miquel received a BSc in Computer Science from the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona in 1988 and a PhD from the same university in 1993, where he is currently a Professor of Logistics and Aeronautics and the Director of the research group LOGISIM. He is the author of several scientific papers and research books, and has recently been nominated by the Society for Computer Simulation for the Outstanding Professional Contribution Award (2013). He has participated as general Co-Chair and Programme Chair in the organisation of several international conferences, and has also led several talks as an invited speaker. He has supervised six PhD theses and led several research projects, and is a founder member of an innovative spin-off company, Aslogic. His research interests focus on aeronautical management, logistic systems, the development of decision support systems, causal modelling and discrete event simulation.

Day 3 - 17 March
Session:
Aviation & Border Security, Control & Facilitation

12:30 - 12:55 - IT intelligence improves passenger quality factors at airport security screening
Synopsis: Peak workloads at screening processes are the main bottleneck of several airport terminals. INTERACTION developed a tool to smooth this peak: influencing passenger preferences by assigning time windows with different reward policies. This will help balance demand with capacity at the passenger screening process. Besides the different reward mechanisms to extend the use of the proposed technology in Athens Airport, the impacts that can be achieved with the tool are: better management of passenger dwell time transforming queuing by waiting, a reduction of idle airport resources and improved predictability at boarding for the airline.
