Day 1 - 15 March
Session:
Aviation & Border Security, Control & Facilitation
14:00 - 14:25
- The future of aviation security regulation
Synopsis: Civil aviation has long been a target for terrorists. How can operators be confident they have understood the evolving risks to their operations, and that their security arrangements are robust? Part of the answer lies in the adoption of security management systems, or SeMS. The UK has developed a framework for the security management system approach to operators’ quality assurance, and the CAA is now leading its rollout in the UK. SeMS is also a necessary precursor to any future move towards a form of performance-based regulation, geared towards the delivery of security outcomes.
Audience will learn:
- The role and value of the security management systems (SeMS) approach to operators' quality assurance of their security performance
- The key principles underpinning an effective security management system, and which within them are especially crucial to success
- How industry's adoption of SeMS can drive a shift to performance-based oversight, with benefits for regulator and operators alike
- How the rollout of SeMS is being delivered in the UK, and where more information can be found
- The relationship between SeMS and a possible move in due course to a more sophisticated form of aviation security regulation
