J Lee Glenn, Director Aviation Design, HKS Architects Inc, USA

Speaker Biograghy: As Design Director of the HKS Aviation Studio, Lee is responsible for design leadership and design management in support of major terminal development programmes, providing unique design solutions representing the character of the airport and region. Elegant detailing, with functional and technical integration, are consistent traits of his award-winning projects. Solely focused on the aviation prototype, Lee has led the design of over US$4bn in terminal projects. His aviation work includes two programmes of over US$1bn, several programmes of over US$500m and intimately scaled regional terminals. Lee’s clients have included some of the busiest airports in the world, such as ATL, DFW, SFO, SLC and SEA. Throughout the life of each project, he ensures that a clear conceptual vision guides the work while incorporating the complex requirements of a functional airport terminal programme. Personal fact: Lee is an accomplished racing sailor with over 15,000 offshore miles, including a trans-Atlantic passage.

Day 2 - 15 March
Session:
Airport Design, Planning & Development - Middle East & Asia

16:20 - 16:50 - Long Thanh International Airport: design competition for a developing nation
Synopsis: Supporting economic growth and connectivity, Vietnam is creating a new international gateway for its strategic location in Asia. 35km from Ho Chi Minh City, the Long Thanh International Airport programme redevelops a rubber plantation into an aviation facility ultimately capable of 100MAP. This competition design for the first passenger terminal of the airport illustrates a 25MAP, international/domestic facility. A highly rational airside and terminal plan, clothed in romantic, regional expression, provides intuitive passenger movement and dynamic spatial character. The design supports an integrated, non-aeronautical revenue development programme, flexibility, operational efficiency, multi-modal access and a culturally, contextual passenger experience.
