Speaker Biograghy: Derek has 20 years' experience in aviation and has held various Director roles in UK and international airports. He joined Heathrow in 2013 after spending three years as Managing Director at Aberdeen International Airport. He has a BSc in Fire Risk Engineering and a Master’s degree in Risk Management, and is currently undertaking doctorate research in business. His current position is Operational Strategy Director, responsible for the creation and operational delivery of Heathrow’s business strategy. He is leading Heathrow’s expansion programme to deliver increased airport capacity and the future operating models for an expanded Heathrow. He is a board member of NATS, a pension trustee for the BAA pension scheme and a founding member of the Performance-based Regulation Industry Group in the UK.

Synopsis: The presentation aims to explain the history of Heathrow, the role the airport plays within global aviation and the UK economy. It will explain the political and legal process of getting a decision from the UK Government to expand, the process required to design and build a new airport, and the challenges expected along the way. Finally it will provide a view of what an expanded airport will look like and achieve as an icon of global aviation.
